Itinerary for Saturday thru Thursday 9-14 June 2007

Saturday June 9     Antietam battlefield with Dr. James McPherson.  We’ll start the morning in Frederick where S.O. 191 was recovered (the Best Farm), cover Jackson’s siege operations at Harpers Ferry and make a few stops on the South Mountain battlefields.   After lunch we’ll tour the Antietam battlefield, with stops at the First Corps battleline, the Cornfield, Bloody Lane, Roulette farm house and Burnside’s famous bridge and McClellan’s headquarters.

 

Sunday  June 10     Chancellorsville battlefield with Robert K. Krick.  We’ll start at Zoan Church and then stop at the site of the last meeting between Lee & Jackon, and then we’ll follow the route of Jackson’s famous flank march.  Afterward, we’ll stand in the Mountain Road where Jackson sustained his mortal wound and then we’ll follow the route of Jackson’s ambulance to Guinea Station and visit the Jackson shrine.  We’ll also cover the action at Salem Church and walk the sunken road behind the stonewall at Fredericksburg

 

Monday  June 11  Wilderness & Spotsylvania battlefields.  With Ed Bearss We’ll cover Grant’s 1864 battlefield with stops at Saunders’ Field, Brock Road/Plank Road intersection and the Widow Tapp field where Lee met the Texas Brigade.  In the afternoon we will tour the Spotsylvania battlefield with emphasis on the 10 & 12 May assaults of the Sixth Corps. If time permits, we’ll visit Ellwoood and the site of Grant’s headquarters.

 

Tuesday June 12 . Gettysburg battlefield.  with Jeff Wert.  We’ll cover the first days’ fight from the McPherson barn over to Barlow’s knoll. We’ll also tour the  Peach Orchard and Little Round Top.  In the afternoon we’ll cover the operations at East Cemetery Hill, Culp’s Hill and then finish with Pickett’s assault.  Along with the usual stops, we’ll visit some sites that the average tourist (and veteran visitor) overlook or are unaware of. We’ll cover the dramatic action  of Bushbeck’s brigade at Kuhn’s brickyard and follow the route of Longstreet’s flank march on July 2nd.  We’ll also walk along the Second Corps line at the high water mark.    

 

Wednesday June 13     Richmond & Petersburg battlefields  We’ll begin at Lee’s headquarters and follow the course of the Seven Days’ battles from Mechanicsville to Malvern Hill.  We’ll walk the Union right (which is private property) at Gaines’ Mill, and stop at Jackson’s battlefield at White Oak Swamp.  We’ll also cover Cold Harbor, the Battle of the Crater  and Fort Stedman.  Again, if we have time, we’ll make a stop or two in order to interpret Butler’s Bermuda Hundred Campaign..

 

Thursday June14    First & Second Manassas battlefields with John Hennessy    We’ll start the morning at the famous Stone Bridge spanning Bull Run, climb Matthews Hill and walk the ground at Henry House Hill.  The afternoon will be devoted to the Second Battle of Bull Run.
