This tour features the incomparable Ed Bearss, regarded by everyone as the dean of Civil War battlefield tour guides. Join Ed for this exciting tour of two significant battlefields, Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s 1864 raid on Washington, and the escape route used by John Wilkes Booth after he shot President Lincoln.

We’ll start the tour on Tuesday evening April 10 at 8 PM with two lectures. First, Dr. Mark Snell, director of the Civil War Center at Shepherd University, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, will discuss the Union and Confederate commanders in the Antietam campaign and Ted Alexander, chief historian at the Antietam National Battlefield will discuss Early’s raid.

On Wednesday, we’ll cover the battlefield of Antietam with our guide Dennis Frye, who has written extensively on the Maryland Campaign. The next day, with Ted Alexanderas our guide, we’ll visit Monocacy battlefield, Fort Stevens, where Lincoln was under fire and other sites associated with Lincoln’s wartime Washington. On Friday the incomparable Ed Bearss will lead the group on a day-long tour of the first battle of Bull Run. And finally, on Saturday, we’ll visit Ford’s Theater and with Ed Bearss we’ll retrace the route used by John Wilkes Booth in his escape from Washington.
