Join the dean of Civil War Tour Guides Ed Bearss for this detailed study of the cavalry actions associated with the battle of Gettysburg. We’ll take one day to examine the actions concerning Stuart’s route to Gettysburg. In addition, we’ll devote Saturday to follow the path of Lee’s retreat to the Potomac River at Falling Waters. And, finally, on Sunday we’ll cover the cavalry action of Custer’s at East Cavalry field, the morning fighting at Culp’s Hill and in the

The weekend will begin at 8 PM on Thursday evening Oct. 7th  with lectures by Eric Wittenberg, an authority on Lee’s retreat and Jeff Wert . Eric will give a strategic overview of the complex operations conducted during the retreat while Jeff will give a summary of the performance of the Army of the Potomac.

On Friday Ed Bearss will lead the group to visit the site of Corbit’s cavalry charge in Westminster, Maryland. From there we’ll follow the path that Jeb Stuart took on his journey to Gettysburg.  In the afternoon we’ll cover the cavalry action at Hanover and Custer’s affair at Hunterstown.

Saturday will be devoted to following the retreat of Lee’s army from Gettysburg. With Ed Bearss we’ll follow the route taken by Lee’s veterans to the Potomac crossing sites at Falling Waters and Williamsport. We’ll start at the Cashtown Inn, examine the battlefield which featured the cavalry engagement at Fairfield, review the street fighting in Hagerstown and cover the fighting at Smithsburg, Monterey Gap and Funkstown. Finally, we’ll stop at the house where Confederate general Johnston Pettigrew was mortally wounded.

Our final day, again with Ed Bearss as our guide,  will be packed with excitement as we ride with Custer and his Wolverines on East Cavalry field, ascend Culp’s Hill to examine the early morning action of July 3rd and after lunch we’ll walk the most hallowed ground – you’ll be in the footsteps of Pickett’s division as they made their assault against the Union line along Cemetery Ridge.

This is a great tour which features a lot of sites you wouldn’t be able to see on your own. Enroll today!
